Position Sizing: The Only Formula That Matters
Ignore this and no strategy will save you. Master it and mediocre strategies survive.
In this phase, I’m going to introduce you to the world of trading and help you build the right foundation before we ever worry about entries, strategies, or making money. I want you to understand what trading actually is, how traders approach the market, and what you should realistically expect from the learning process. We’ll talk about the difference between trading and gambling, why trading is ultimately a game of probabilities rather than prediction, and why a winning trade is not always a good trade—and a losing trade is not always a bad one. I’ll also introduce you to the mindset I want you to carry throughout this course: focusing on your process, managing risk, becoming comfortable with uncertainty, and learning how to make independent decisions. You’ll get your first look at the stages traders typically move through as they develop, the basic language you’ll hear throughout the course, and the framework I use to simplify a trade into four essential components: context, location, trigger, and risk. By the end of this phase, my goal is not for you to know how to trade yet. My goal is for you to understand what you are learning, why you are learning it, and how to approach the journey ahead. I want you to understand the environment you are entering before I begin teaching you how to operate within it. You should understand that trading is a probability-based decision-making process involving uncertainty and risk. You should know that becoming a trader happens gradually and that technical knowledge, execution, psychology, and consistency develop at different stages. Most importantly, I want you to enter the next phase with one expectation firmly established: You are not here to learn how to predict every move in the market. You are here to learn how to identify opportunities, manage uncertainty, control risk, and make better decisions consistently
